The Moon

Here are things you can do on the moon that you can't do on Earth.

You can lift a car. If there was a car on the moon, you would probably be able to lift it because it would only be one sixth of its weight. It would still be very heavy though.

On the moon you can build much taller buildings than on Earth because there is less pressure on the structures. It would be easy to have a building that was more that 1000 meters tall. On Earth it would be very difficult.

You can see the stars the way they are in their true colour. During a moon night, the stars don't flicker, and you can see their colour the way it is; even the sun looks white on the moon because there is no air to scatter the blue portion of the light away from the light rays.

On the moon you can leave a foot print or hand print and it can stay there for thousands of years because there is no air or rain to wash it away.

On the moon you can enjoy a day that lasts for 2 weeks and a night that lasts for 2 weeks. One day on the moon lasts for 28 earth days (4 weeks). The day time is 2 weeks and the night time is 2 weeks.

Moon Day

One day on the moon lasts for 28 earth Days(4 weeks), Two weeks of day and two weeks of night. This has caused probes to fail their missions as they freeze in the long moon night.

The orbital period of the moon is also 28 days so we always see the same side of the moon on Earth. They call this rotation synchronization tidal locking. The moon is tidally locked to the Earth.

Titan The Moon

Titan, Saturn's Largest moon is only 80% bigger than our own moon but it has a thick atmosphere, lakes made of methane, dunes, mountains and even coastlines.

Image generated by artificial intelligence (wonder)

Methane, Propane and Butane are usually gassed on earth, but on Titan they exist as a liquid because the moon is very cold.

Moon Mountain

The tallest mountain on the moon isn't the tallest object. A ridge that was thrown up by an impact is taller.
The tallest mountain on the moon is called mons Huygens. It is 5 & ½ km high at the peak. Smaller than many of Earth's mountains, but still very tall.
The selenean Summit is a similar height to Everest on earth but it is not a mountain but the side of an impact crater. It is 10.7 km tall, slightly higher than Everest and at the height of commercial jet cruising altitude on earth.

Sleeping on the Moon

Night time on the moon lasts for about 2 weeks so if they send a solar powered probe it must go onto sleep mode for 2 weeks at a time unless it can store extra power during the day time.
The recent Charndrayaan 3 probe was forced to go into sleep mode shortly after it landed because of the long moon night.
